I believe tutoring works best when a student feels understood, challenged, and supported at the same time.
I’m Joshua Williamson, owner and lead tutor of Tutor With Joshua. I’m also a current Charles County Public Schools teacher, and I bring more than 10 years of tutoring experience along with a professional background in science and education. I hold a degree in biology, spent more than six years working as a chemist, and have taught and supported students across a wide range of math and science subjects.
My approach to tutoring is highly individualized. I don’t believe in simply repeating the same explanation louder or giving students a list of steps to memorize. I want to understand where the confusion begins, what the student already understands, how they think through problems, and what kind of explanation will make the material finally click.
That means a session may involve rebuilding a missing foundation, approaching a difficult concept from a different direction, practicing problem-solving strategies, preparing for an upcoming exam, or helping a student develop stronger study habits and organization. I work with students from elementary school through college, as well as adult learners, in subjects ranging from foundational mathematics and algebra through calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, and SAT/ACT preparation.
One of the things I value most is helping students become more independent. My goal is not to create a student who can succeed only when I am sitting beside them. I want them to leave tutoring with a stronger understanding of the material, better ways to approach unfamiliar problems, greater confidence in their own reasoning, and the ability to recognize what to do when they get stuck.
I also understand that students learn differently. Some need more structure. Some need additional time to process. Some need to see the same idea represented in several different ways before it becomes meaningful. Others are advanced and need to be challenged beyond routine practice. I especially value working with students who may not thrive under a one-size-fits-all approach, including neurodivergent learners.
Patience and respect are central to how I teach. A student should be able to say, “I don’t understand,” without feeling embarrassed. Mistakes are useful because they show us how the student is thinking, and I would much rather help someone understand why an answer works than simply tell them whether it is right or wrong.
Before becoming a full-time classroom teacher, my professional path included science, tutoring, and substitute teaching. Those experiences shaped the way I work with students today. My science background taught me to value evidence, reasoning, and problem-solving. Tutoring taught me how different two learners can be even when they are studying the same topic. Teaching in the classroom has given me an even broader perspective on curriculum, pacing, student needs, and the realities families and students face every day.
Through Tutor With Joshua, I provide one-on-one math, science, test-prep, study-skills, and academic-support tutoring online and in person throughout Southern Maryland. I’ve also worked as a contracted tutoring provider with Charles County Department of Social Services, partnered with Boundless Expectations, LLC, been featured by The BayNet, and earned recognition as a Thumbtack Top Pro.
At the end of the day, I want students to leave tutoring thinking something a little different from when they arrived:
“I can do this. I understand what I’m doing. And I know how to keep going when it gets difficult.”
That is the kind of progress I care about most.
